Captain Jim Scoggins learned to sail on an Alcort Sailfish on Lake Champlain in the mid-50s. After a hiatus of several years he returned to the sport of sailing aboard his 22' Catalina, "ChriSarah" on Canyon Lake near San Antonio, Tx. There he joined the Alamo Yacht Club and participated in many regattas, winning few but having a great time!
In 1986, following a successful career in health care administration in Texas, he relocated to Mystic, CT and purchased a dockaminium in the Mystic Shipyard. He moved his beloved, and still owned, "Faster Horses", an O'Day 39 to that slip and it resides there still as one of the vessels in his training and charter fleet.
1993 saw the incorporation of Sail the Sounds, LLC as an American Sailing Association Training Center, yacht charter, day rentals and sailing and cruising club. The fleet has grown to include three Hunter charter boats -- CT Ducks (46/), Dolphin (36'), Tern (33') and six Hunter 240s used for basic sail training, day rentals, and sailing club vessels.
Today, with the assistance of his wife Teresa and his Portuguese Water Dog Bosun, the business continues to grow and diversify with the addition of SUP Paddleboards instruction and rentals. Now operating from Mystic Shipyard, Mystic Point Marina, and Noank Village Boatyard, Sail the Sounds is the largest operation of its kind between Manhattan and Boston. Often copied, but never surpassed.
Customer service is our focus, safety and fun on the water for all is our goal. You are invited to enter the dream-filled world of sailing and paddle.
